Overview
The format of the Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Surgery is designed to meet the needs of generalist GPs as well as those with more procedural experience. This course is a practical based workshop with theory content.
Successful completion of the Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine (which includes basic surgical management and techniques) is encouraged for enrolment in the Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Surgery. However the Certificate in Primary Care Skin Cancer Surgery is open to any doctor who has experience in minor skin surgery.
Program Objectives
The Certificate workshop is designed to meet the needs of busy medical practitioners by providing a practical workshop to allow GPs to practice various suturing and procedural techniques in a supportive environment.

The course includes:
- On-line predisposing activities including theory and practical (completed in your own time anytime prior to the workshop component)
- A 2 day weekend practical workshop
- Reference materials including copy of all PowerPoint slides presented
- On-line theory multiple choice question assessment (completed in your own time within 6 months of attending the workshop)
Online Pre-Disposing Activity
To prepare the participant, the University of Queensland School of Medicine has 5 online suturing techniques to review and practice if necessary. The pre activity is not marked as part of the assessment. A record of your participation is kept for the various colleges as part of the CPD/CME component
Workshop Delivery
This course is presented by a New Zealand surgeon Dr Sharad P Paul joined by experienced GPs to assist in optimising the learning outcomes. The content covers sections on theory plus hands-on practical sessions. This course is designed to assist GPs to develop confidence in various procedures and understand their limitations without further practical experience.

Assessment Requirements
The on-line multiple choice questions are to be completed at your convenience within six months of the completion of the workshop. They are designed in such a way that you are able to log in and out as many times as you wish. They are open book and are not subject to a time limit. A Statutory Declaration must be completed and signed at the conclusion to verify you have completed the questions without outside assistance.

Both the Saturday and Sunday components of this course has been approved for the Training Grant for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program (Procedural Grant Program).

Relationship to the Master of Medicine
The certificate in primary care skin cancer surgery is approved for financial recognition in the masters (IMED7005, therapeutics 2: surgical repair). Students who participate will not have to pay for IMED7005 in the masters but will be required to fulfil the assessment requirements for IMED7005. The workshop also fulfils the compulsory practical workshop component of the masters.
Students will not be required to pay for this unit again and will need to inform the UQ Masters Coordinator if they wish to seek recognition of prior learning (RPL) upon enrolling for the course.
Course Fees
The Skin Cancer Surgery Program is a two unit workshop from the Master of Medicine (Primary Care Skin Cancer Medicine) and as such the tax deductible workshop cost is $2904 inc GST.
Participants will be provided with pre-disposing activities, reference materials including a full colour copy of all PowerPoint slides, instruments, suture material, on-line assessment and catering.
